Become a Real-Life SUPERHERO!

Join the “SDG-Hero Challenge”!

Do you know what the SDGs are and who created them? Do you know until what year they run and which goals are most important for Curaçao? We challenge you to earn digital badges and prove that you’re a true ‘SDG-hero’!

Maybe you’ve come across the English acronym “SDGs” before (you pronounce it as es-dee-jees). SDG stands for “Sustainable Development Goals.” These are 17 goals aimed at making the world a better place, and they extend until 2030. These goals were agreed upon by all the countries that are part of the United Nations (UN), including Curaçao as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

These goals were established in 2015, and everyone worldwide, even in non-UN member countries, could contribute ideas on their content. Eventually, 17 goals were chosen by the UN, focusing on peace and security, economic development, environmental protection, and the complete eradication of poverty and hunger. Each goal was given specific “targets” — a total of 169 — outlining what needs to be achieved to meet the SDGs.

The SDG's and Curaçao

Curaçao has chosen 6 SDGs to focus on:
  • SDG1: No Poverty
  • SDG3: Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG4: Quality Education
  • SDG7: Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG14: Life Below Water
In December 2018, Curaçao drafted a “Roadmap for SDG Implementation,” outlining these goals and what we need to do to achieve them. One of the action points in the report is the “SDG Action Week,” of which this “SDG-Hero” challenge is a part.

As a Small Island nation, the SDG's have special meaning for Curaçao. To understand why, check out this video, that was made by the UN for the opening of the SIDS conference earlier this year.

SDG 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

The United Nations highlight the critical importance of this third "Sustainable Development Goal." The aim is to make sure that EVERYONE, no matter where they live, can enjoy good health and well-being by 2030.

‘Good health and well-being’ means that people have access to the necessary healthcare services, including safe and affordable medicines and vaccines, and that they live in environments that promote physical and mental health.

It is the responsibility of governments to make sure that no one is left behind when it comes to health. This includes preventing and treating diseases, providing access to quality healthcare services, and making certain that everyone has the chance to lead a healthy life. This also means tackling issues like mental health, road safety, and reducing deaths and illnesses caused by pollution.

EVERYONE has the right to live a healthy life, to access healthcare, and to benefit from a safe and clean environment.

SDG 3 in Curaçao:

Since 2017, Curaçao has been changing its healthcare system to make sure that citizens get professional and affordable care. The government is also focusing on improving mental health services, and increasing safety for families and youth preventing chronic health conditions that are not transmissible from person to person, for example diabetes and cancer.
